App Developer Dad Creates App to help his Son with Special Needs [Press Release]

Dad takes Son’s Apraxia diagnosis by the reins and develops SpeechBox™ app for iPad in a quest to help his son and others.

GLEN ROCK, New Jersey, October 24, 2012 – Today, The Jonah Bonah Learning Company, LLC releases SpeechBox™ app for Apple’s iPad.

SpeechBox™ is a word-practice app designed to work for children with Apraxia of Speech, Autism, Down syndrome, and other speech language disorders. With its beautiful interface and engaging colorful pictures, parents, educators, speech-language pathologists, and others can use it to help children practice speaking simple words.

After becoming frustrated from the inefficiencies of other apps and the desire to help his son succeed, app developer Dad put his development and creative skills to work. “While using the only apps that were available, I quickly discovered how complex some of them were. I had no idea how to get started. When I finally got through all of the menus and was ready to work, I found myself skipping most of the words because they were just not simple enough for my son to practice with. I also found him getting bored because the pictures weren’t very exciting to look at,” says Henry T. Kirk, the developer and Dad behind SpeechBox™.

SpeechBox™ was made to be simple. Within moments of opening the app you can instantly begin practicing. There are no complex menus to navigate through. Simply tap on a box, and it displays its contents. Selecting a picture is as easy as moving or ‘digging’ around the pictures and tapping on the one you wish to view. “Allowing the child to dig around to select their next word is very engaging for a child. This approach was developed after testing several prototypes with my son,” Mr. Kirk explained.

SpeechBox™’s selection contains over 700 beautiful retina quality pictures, with each of them having been hand picked. “Selecting appropriate pictures was very important to me. I scoured photo catalogs to find the perfect photo that represented each word,” says Mr. Kirk. SpeechBox is also customizable; you can add pictures of friends, family and other common objects using the iPad’s camera or photo library.
